Memory and 64-bit Software

The term “64-bit” refers to a class of memory and architecture and the software that runs on them. In a 32-bit Windows environment, each server process has access to only 2GB of the 4GB virtual address space. The Windows operating system usually reserves a portion, 2GB by default. You can reduce the amount of memory Windows has access to to 1GB, leaving 3GB for HFM. However, even if a machine has more than 4GB of virtual memory, no more than 3GB will be available for any given single process.

In 64-bit systems, this restriction is practically nonexistent (for now). This “new” architecture (super-computers in the ’70s took advantage of 64-bit architecture) has such a high memory limit that most processors cannot currently access such a limit of memory.
