VBScript for Oracle HFM > What Is VBScript?

What Is VBScript?

Here is the first misunderstanding about HFM. The rules are not written in Visual Basic. They are written in something called VBScript, owned and developed by Microsoft. VBScript is a lightweight active scripting language. It is a subset of the Visual Basic language, and uses similar concepts like procedures, constants, variables, user interaction, array handling, date/time functions, error handling, functions, objects, and string manipulation.

Here is the second misunderstanding about HFM: It does not use the full toolset available from VBScript. There are many functions you can’t use. For example, anything that requires user interaction, like a message box, will not work in HFM rules.

HFM does give you something else, though. There is a full set of tools that Oracle provides. All of these begin with an “HS.” This is the name space. It stands presumably for Hyperion Solutions. All this does is allow any functions and objects to be written without concern if someone else uses the same name. For example, Oracle may have a tool that has a function called EXP, and so does Hyperion. So which one should VBScript use? This “container” keeps the functions and objects grouped.
