Chapter 13 Legal Issues > Understanding Privacy Issues

Understanding Privacy issues

Although the explosion of the use of computers has certainly helped people share information, it has also resulted in people having easy access to massive amounts of personal data about individuals. If this data is not protected, it can negatively affect an individual’s privacy. Even if individuals are very careful with their privacy data and reveal it only when required to do so for business transactions, they can still suffer if the business suffers a data breach. If these businesses don’t protect the customer’s data, the customer loses.

Because of this, many laws have been passed requiring organizations to protect personal data. Despite these laws, data breaches continue. For example, Chapter 11 mentioned the Sony data breach of customer data for over 77 million customers, with the credit data of as many as 10 million customers being captured. What was the mistake these customers made? Some suggest it was doing business with Sony, and the corporation will be facing a significant amount of litigation because of this data breach.
