The Core Message

Stories and framing won’t do you any good, of course, if you don’t have a solid point to make. While you will have to tell different stories and deploy different frames depending on the situation, it is your desired end result that dictates the way you get there.

Start by identifying your core message. That’s the thing that determines everything else you say. It’s your unique point of view, your angle of attack. It’s also referred to as the thesis, theme, or governing thought you are trying to explain, promote, and drive home.

Speaking with influence requires that you do some homework. Who will listen—literally and figuratively—if you haven’t any experience, expertise, conviction, or credibility in your topic and haven’t narrowed that topic sufficiently to arrive at the core of what you want others to understand? What impact will your presentation make? When it’s all said and done, the last person is shuffling toward the door, and you’re collecting your things from the podium, what will they remember? What will have stuck to their intellectual walls that will cause them to support a proposal or resist your opposition’s efforts at influence? Ideally, it’s the key points you pinned to that wall in unimpeachable support of your core message.
