THE HERO EMPLOYEE

Some employees always go above and beyond their defined requirements and put in a heroic effort, no matter what job they’re given. These employees become the hero employees of any business. When they’re called on, they are the employees who never turn down a task and never say no. If you ask, they will be there. You often hear they have taken on a job because “it just needed to get done.” As managers, we would like to have all of our employees be this type of superstar. So what could be wrong with this kind of dedication? Nothing, if it is in response to a specific call for help. Unfortunately, not all employees are heroes, which often means that managers are overrelying on those employees who are.

Problems can arise if the hero employees become the channels through which all activities have to pass. This can create choke points and a dependence that can hurt team performance, and it can also put the business at tremendous risk should the hero employees decide to leave. It can create problems with otherwise good employees as well who become frustrated and annoyed if they start to see the heroes as threats (by their actions, the heroes change what had been acceptable standards for the job). In these situations, the hero employees can create a performance risk for the overall employee team. Furthermore, why should the other employees put in any extra effort if the hero employees are going to get all the accolades and opportunities!
