5. Global customer dynamics are on our doorstep

In 2007, South Florida CEO Magazine reported it was time for the local companies in the Miami region to “go global,” citing dozens of Chinese-owned companies like Envision Peripherals, Latin American enterprises like Brazilian-headquartered Embraer, and European companies like Nokia that had moved significant United States – based operations to within a stone’s throw of the Miami International Airport. According to the article, the global companies had already brought $26 billion and 230,000 people to the region (Hemlock and Cohen, 2007). The flip side of that positive economic report is that the presence of global competition, whether in our backyards or otherwise, puts every company on the global stage.
