Chapter 12 Compact Disc System and Beyond - Pg. 223

CHAPTER 12 Compact Disc System and Beyond Compact Discs The compact disc (CD) system is a rare example of international cooperation leading to a standard that has been adopted worldwide, something that was notably lacking in the first generation of video-cassette recorders. When video-cassette recorders first appeared they were performing an action that was not possible before, but audio compact discs would be in competition with existing methods of sound reproduction, and it would have been ridiculous to offer several competing standards. The CD was the first consumer product to feature digital coding as a replacement for analog methods, and though the system still looks and sounds impressive it is now being overtaken by more recent developments. Nevertheless, the principles of CD recording are likely to be with us for a considerable time. n Note
