The days of writing an editorial for a newspaper or, worse, pub- lishing in a peer-reviewed print journal aren't dead but they are fading. Again, we can look to analogies in the past for instruction here. Consider that the only kinds of books anyone had seen prior to the printing press were those that had been copied by hand. As a result, when Gutenberg created his first Bible, the font he used looked like handwriting. Social network designers and online community architects need to be thinking of ways to get in front of these new visual literacies. We need to begin asking questions like what "makes for a good video scholarship?" What makes for an effective video-based presentation? In an age where it's already possible to create streaming videos from a cell phone, how can I ensure that participants in my social network are able to not merely upload those videos, but upload quality videos that other members of the network and community are going to want to see?
