If the replacement term is already in use as a synonym (rather than a preferred term), the existing synonym must first be changed by appending a numeric discriminator (e.g., `[2]' as in `service [2]' so as to distinguish it from the unmarked term `service') before performing the above steps. 8.7.8.2 Changing an unpublished term 1. If the intended replacement term is already in use as a preferred term, the intended change should not occur. 2. If the replacement term is not already in use, this may be achieved by a. overwriting the term; b. identifying each rule statement, fact type, and term definition that uses the original term; c. updating each such rule statement, fact type, or term definition by replacing the original term with the replacement term (after recording the previous version with an appropriate status and expiry date); d. once any other terms are similarly changed, republishing all changed rule statements, fact types, and term definitions. 3.
