FUNdINg the teAM estimating Your Needs There are several ways to determine how much funding will be needed for a project. One approach is the top-down approach described in the section Sizing the Team. Here you are basing the estimate on the expected demand from the project manag- ers and the developers (either by size of total budget, or based on staffing ratios). For example, if you are supporting a team with 10 project managers and 30 develop- ers, and you know it takes 1 designer to support the work of 3 or 4 project manag- ers, you can begin to build a staffing plan. Or you might look at the total budget and know that for projects of the type your organization is supporting it should take 6 to 10% of the budget to support the needed design and user research.
