Everything’s set and ready to go—it’s time to take your shot. There’s just one question kind of hanging out there: How long do you keep that shutter button held down to make a proper exposure? Well, of course, you could just experiment with different amounts of time, and after a few tries, you’ll get it figured out, but there’s a faster way: If you have an iPhone, go to the App Store and download the free LongTime Exposure Calculator app, which does all the math for you. You tell it which kind of filter you’re using (8-stop, 10-stop, and so on), and it tells you how long to keep the shutter open. If you don’t have an iPhone, you’re not out of luck.
