Chunk Information

For Web content, it’s best to chunk information into smaller topics or sets of topics that can be easily grouped and organized. Chunking also makes it simpler to plan how you’ll link topics together. With printed text, readers can readily flip back a few pages to read material again. Online, however, readers more easily lose their train of thought and aren’t as likely to return to pages they’ve already passed.

Organize content so the chunks of information can stand on their own as much as possible. Also, keep in mind that viewers don’t want to read long pages of text onscreen. Many also don’t like to scroll, so consider this as you plan links and how information will appear to your readers.

Compare the following two blog posts for a good and bad example of chunking information (FIGURES 2.3 and 2.4).
