Refine Your Senses

Humans prize their stereoscopic vision; however, while you’re writing, don’t forget to describe with all your senses. Use visual details to paint vivid pictures. Add gustatory, olfactory, tactile, and auditory details to draw your readers completely into the story.


Sensazione

Michael Gelb reveals in How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci (Delacorte, 1998) that da Vinci felt developing the senses was an important part of fully realizing experiences. Sensazione is defined as “the continual refinement of the senses, especially sight, as a means to enliven experience.” One of da Vinci’s mottos was saper vedere, or knowing how to see. You can develop your sensory experiences with active and focused seeing, smelling, tasting, and touching.
