4.6. Conclusions

Enterprise software delivery organizations are under significant pressure to reduce costs while improving productivity and performance. A primary approach is to use global resources to reduce labor costs and locate specialized skills. However, a main impediment to delivering these improvements is the challenge of collaboration within teams and across the emerging software delivery supply chains. Unless organizations identify and address these collaboration issues, the benefits from global team working are lost.

In this chapter, I examine the main elements of collaborative software delivery from the perspective of team interaction, globalization, and multiorganizational supply chain management. We see that CALM plays a critical role in reducing the risk of failure. Automation through collaborative delivery environments helps to focus on CALM and can be customized to deliver a CALM model that is well matched to the global delivery approach in use.
