8.8. Rollout Principles

The pilot projects were the initial steps in a broader adoption of agile delivery practices in Danske Bank. The rollout was aimed at taking an accelerated approach to introducing agile practices as broadly as possible throughout the enterprise software delivery organization. Given the characteristics of Danske Bank and its history, several important rollout principles were established.

First, the organization decided to prioritize system maintenance projects ahead of new development projects while acknowledging that there would be a certain window of opportunity for projects to switch into new practices (e.g., once a project was approved and about to be initiated or during transition of the project from delivery into production). Given the high investment in maintaining existing systems, the target distribution was to have two-thirds of the projects adopting the agile delivery process to be system maintenance projects.
