Creating Frames

Framing devices are usually easy to find in most situations, but frames also can be created. To create frames on a shoot, you must train yourself to know what kind of objects make great frames. Moving objects around is a great way to start creating frames. Another image taken at the Montage Beverly Hills hotel illustrates this concept (11.3).

I had already taken several portraits of the groom when I decided to take a framed portrait for variety. I could have used the rectangular mirror in the room to frame the groom, but it just wasn’t creative enough. As I looked outside, I noticed the sliding doors leading to the balcony. They were wide open, so I brought them together to create a nice frame for the groom. The dog at his feet was an unexpected bonus.
