11. Framing > Abstract Frames

Abstract Frames

Abstract frames are similar to applying a texture effect in post-production. Although I’m not a fan of textures placed over images in Photoshop, I enjoy being able to create a similar effect using the materials available when taking a photograph. What’s needed for implementing an abstract frame is a textured material with gaps. It is inside these gaps that you can feature your subjects.

For example, I found this piece of frosted glass with an abstract design (11.10). I quickly analyzed it to see if it could be used as an abstract frame. You can see the gaps between the design. I wanted to feature the bride’s beautiful and elegant face, her belt and hands, so I positioned her accordingly. An off-camera flash behind the bride removed distractions from the background. Without the abstract frame, this photo would be far less interesting. That’s the power of abstract frames. Incorporate them in your work; you and your clients will love the results.
