Contrasting textures can be an effective way to make a simple photo interesting. As discussed in Chapter 13, “Contrasts,” your eye is innately attracted to contrasts. This fact alone creates endless opportunities for photographers. Imagine a photo where an elderly person is standing expressionless in front of Wall Street in New York during rush hour in his/her pajamas. You can’t help but smile. Your eyes see the image but your brain is trying to make sense of it. It’s like a game of tug-of-war between your senses.
A rustic wooden door offers a ready contrast to the young, beautiful, and modern couple (15.25). The bouquet in her hands is consistent with the color and texture of the vegetation surrounding them. For this reason, the bouquet ties it all together. If this photo had been taken at the beach, for example, it probably wouldn’t be nearly as interesting.
