Depth with Context

As visual storytellers, our job is to tell a story about our subjects. If you saw a photograph of a stranger, how much could you tell about this individual just based on the information present in the photograph? Even though you may have lenses capable of large apertures to blur the background and isolate your subjects, they may not always be the most effective tools to tell your story. There are many times where the background is just as important as your subjects.

During a wedding in Santa Barbara, CA, I wanted to showcase the Persian culture in the wedding details, as well as the bride and groom’s guests. I quickly changed my camera settings from f/2.8 to f/8 to get every guest in focus, including the details the bride worked hard on (6.1). The resulting photo contains valuable information about the couple, their religion, their families, and the type of environment they feel comfortable in.
