USING REFLECTIONS in my work is one of my favorite ways to tell multiple stories and to increase the overall impact of a photograph. A well-executed reflection can be a pleasing visual surprise to the viewer, and it can turn an average photograph into a work of art. Reflections have a subtle way of telling multiple stories in a single frame, making them one of the most interesting photographic tools.
One of the biggest misconceptions regarding reflections is that they exist only in mirrors or large bodies of water, when in fact they can also be found in different types of surfaces, such as windows, puddles, wineglasses, home decorations, sunglasses, and vehicles. In this chapter, we will explore the characteristics of various types of reflections. You’ll learn how to train your eyes to spot them and know exactly how to harness their unique photographic potential. Not all reflections behave in the same way. They all require specific knowledge and techniques based on the type of reflective surface. Although mastering reflections is no doubt a lot of work, the payoffs are unparalleled.
