Commentary To explain this rule we must first establish the definition of a “display” typeface and understand how this differs from other fonts. In essence, “display” refers to the use of type at large sizes, such as 72pt size, which may be used for titles on a magazine or headlines in a newspaper. As such, display fonts are “cut” differently because they do not have to contend with being printed small. An important difference might be the removal from display faces of “ink traps” (indents in and around the corners of the letter strokes), which are used in typefaces to compensate for overinking when printed and therefore helping to retain the letterform’s integrity.
