025: Thou shall use real handwriting for convincing handwritten text

Commentary Organic design that showcases the unique handwork of the designer is something magical. It is one of the very few times that only you can provide a specific solution for the client in question. This appeal has led to a proliferation of fake hand-written typefaces. They look like a perfect solution, or at least a quick fix, when seen in a catalog or on a website, yet in practice, they are far less convincing. The key to handwritten type is that it is one-of-a-kind. You know what’s not one-of-a-kind? A font that anyone can have for a couple of coins; or worse, freeware that is the hacked together scribbles of a first-time fontographer. What’s the harm, you say?
