Making and Receiving Phone Calls Via the Internet Using Skype
Skype is a Voice over IP phone service that enables you to make and receive calls over the Web (as opposed to a cellular phone network or traditional telephone landline). The Skype service is available for PCs and Macs and requires special software to transform a computer into a virtual speakerphone, allowing users to make and receive calls that originate from the Internet.
Thanks to a partnership between Facebook and Skype, in Facebook, you can now engage in a free videoconference with any of your Facebook friends who are also online. The iPad-specific Facebook app enables you to use this videoconferencing feature.
There is a free Skype app that was designed for the iPhone, as well as a separate iPad-specific Skype app (that also offers the capability to participate in real-time videoconferences with any other Skype users, including those on a PC). Both Skype apps are available from the App Store.
