    Quick Start: Apple’s iMessage Service

    Whether your iPhone or iPad is connected to the Internet via a Wi-Fi or 3G connection, using iMessage with the Messages app that comes preinstalled on your device, you now can communicate via text messages with other iOS 5 device users.

    Unlike the text-messaging services available through wireless service providers, Apple’s iMessage service is free of charge, and it allows for an unlimited number of text messages to be sent and received.

    The service also taps into your iPhone or iPad’s other functions and allows for the easy sharing of photos, videos, locations, and contacts; plus, it works seamlessly with Notification Center.

    In addition to allowing you to communicate with individual people via text messaging, when the iMessage service is used with the Messages app, it enables you to send the same text message to multiple recipients. It uses a feature referred to as group messaging that enables everyone in that group to participate in the same text-message–based conversation.
