Chapter 5. IT Operations > Chapter Summary

Chapter Summary

How the Internet or an Intranet Works

• An Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides a facility access to the Internet, usually through a T-line. T-lines carry data over fiber-optic lines or copper wire.

• An intranet is the private network secured within a facility.

• HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and RDP use a client-server architecture.

• Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is responsible for guaranteeing the data is received after traversing the network.

• Internet Protocol (IP) is responsible for breaking down messages into packets small enough to travel through the network and for finding the best path over the network.

• The domain name service (DNS) resolves domain names into the IP address that the network understands to reach the correct computer on the intranet or Internet.
