Chapter 7. Security > How to Secure Wireless Networks

How to Secure Wireless Networks

HI001 Objectives:

5.6 Recognize wireless security protocols and best practices.

WEP, WPA, WPA2, AES, RADIUS, SSID naming, MAC filtering, Site surveys, Access point placement

Although Chapter 5 introduced wireless encryption, this section is a review while still adding more information about best practices to secure a wireless network.

The types of encryption standards that might be used to secure a wireless network are as follows:

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP): Secures data using an encryption key but is a weak encryption because the encryption key is static.

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA): Uses TKIP, which changes the encryption key periodically, but is also a weak encryption because it enables hackers to spoof data, or to falsify data on the network.
