The ABCs of Fonts

As soon as you put a single character on your page, you have used a font in your document. And there are several best practices around fonts that you should be aware of.

Don’t outline all the text in a document!

This is going to get me in trouble with a few print shops out there. They’re the places that routinely tell their customers to convert all the text in their documents to outlines in InDesign or boxes in QuarkXPress. These print shops are violating one of the most important best practices I know.

The text in your document is actually a representation of an illustration, created with vector drawing tools, of each character. But when the illustrations are converted into a font, special hinting is applied that makes sure the font lines up correctly on the page.
