Self-Medication Is Outside the Guidelines

Use of antibiotics obtained without prescription for the particular ailment is called self-medication. Antibiotics for self-medication come from over-the-counter sales at pharmacies, black market sales in local grocery stores in large cities, left-over portions of prior prescriptions, importation from countries without enforced requirements for prescriptions, and some Internet sales. A survey conducted in 2003 with 19 European countries showed that self-medication varies widely. The highest rates are in Eastern and Southern Europe where almost 20% of survey respondents acknowledged self-medication within the year covered by the survey.
