Introduction: Email Marketing Is (Not) Dead


It’s not every day that one gets to pick on the Wall Street Journal. It still stands, after all, as one of the most respected and formidable news outlets in the world. Sometimes, however, even the Journal can’t get out of its own way. Such was the case on October 12, 2009, when it published a story by senior tech reporter Jessica Vascellaro.

The piece, entitled, “Why Email No Longer Rules,” declared that electronic mail communications had a good run as king, but that its reign was over. The irony was that when you visited the Wall Street Journal’s website that day and read the article, you were likely to email it to a friend. In fact, Vascellaro’s piece sat right at the top of the Journal’s automatic listing of the most emailed articles of the day.
