Lesson 14. Advanced iTunes Match Tips > A Space-Saving Trick

A Space-Saving Trick

If you listen to iTunes when your computer is online, you can free up disk space if you delete matched, upgraded, or purchased tracks, and let iTunes stream those tracks from iCloud instead. My own modest-sized music library consumes about 25 gigabytes of disk space. If more hard-drive space is needed, the songs that are backed up in iCloud can be deleted, because it’s easy to stream them at any given time.

Because there is plenty of extra disk space at the moment, creating a Smart Playlist containing the lowest-rated and least-listened-to songs allows them to be deleted and frees up plenty of space.

Here’s one way to do this (see Figure 14.2):

1. Go to the File menu and choose New Smart Playlist.

2. Decide how you want to classify songs worth deleting from your computer—remember that they’re still in iCloud.
