Work with Text

It’s one thing to view photos and movies, but how do you enter and edit text? Whether you’re typing a Web address, adding an event to your calendar, or composing a letter, you need to know how to put letters to screen. You’ll encounter the following basic operations throughout the iPad environment.

Type text

Whenever you tap on an editable text area, the iPad’s software keyboard slides up from the bottom of the screen (Figure 7). Type on it as you would a regular keyboard, keeping a few things in mind:

• The screen can’t accommodate a full-sized keyboard, so some characters appear where you may not expect them. For example, you type an exclamation point (!) by holding the Shift (Image) key and tapping the comma (,) key. Number keys are accessed by tapping the “.?123” key, and symbols such as the equals sign (=) are available after next tapping the “#+=” key.
