85. Robin Held

The Seattle art world shook when Robin moved from the adventurous Henry Art Museum to become the Chief Curator/Deputy Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the more conservative Frye Art Museum down the street. With the mandate to increase the Frye’s commitment to contemporary art, she quickly achieved that goal and the city was reawakened to the once-sleepy Frye. Robin continues to “smuggle abstraction” into the collection and refocus the museum on the exploration of representational art. Being Part of a Group

On Art

Seattle has a rich arts culture, receptive to new art and new ideas; a small concentration of museums—both private and public—respected for their collections and their trendsetting practices; very good commercial galleries, many of whose artists are included in major exhibitions and collections worldwide; a very supportive artist community; and ad hoc gatherings of likeminded thinkers. I love being part of a group of arts innovators who plant our stake here.
