The first ten chapters of this book have considered sound, some characteristics of the ear (and hearing in general), principles of sound isolation, and acoustic control measures for performing rooms. The fundamental principles of room acoustics have also been discussed. All of these subjects come under the heading of ‘Acoustics and Psychoacoustics’ but now we must extend our discussion into the realms of electro-acoustics before continuing to look at the very controversial issue of the design of sound control rooms and monitoring systems. Moreover, where we have discussed the performance of relatively empty rooms, we also need to look at the sonic performance of rooms that contain considerable amounts of equipment.
