Chapter 15. General Datacom Concepts > Bandwidth - Pg. 141

Chapter 15 · General Datacom Concepts 141 is the number of bytes per second, which is notated with an upper-case B, as in B/s, kB/s, or MB/s. In the world of datacom, you may also encounter the term "baud 1 rate," and the distinctions between baud and bit/s can be confusing. Baud actually refers to the number of symbols or "signalling units" sent over a data link per second, and since, with some sort of encoding, a signaling unit could in some way actually encode more than one bit, the baud rate of a commu- nication link could be different than the link's bit/s. To avoid any confusion, bit/s will be used throughout this book. B ANDWIDTH Whatever the communications medium, there is always some limit as to how much data a sin- gle communications connection or "channel" can handle; this capacity is known as the chan- nel's bandwidth. Bandwidth is measured by how much information can be sent in a given period of time (bit/s), and a "high bandwidth" connection can carry more than a "low band- width" link. M ULTIPLEXING
