Chapter 34 · It's an Itchy World after All 381 T HE A PPROACH Since so much money is being spent on the attraction, WDI does extensive testing in advance to ensure that as few changes as possible are made after construction begins. The show is broken up into segments, each of which is time-based, but staying flexible on any life-threatening or time-critical elements. Fifteen segments are available, but only nine (to rep- resent Scratchy's nine lives) are to be selected by the audience for each show in order to keep the show interesting and generate repeat business. As the audience files into the venue, they select the first three segments they want to view, and in which order. After these segments, the "director" comes out and guides the audience through the selection of the next three. Each segment is started by the technical director (TD) when everything is in place, safe, and operational. The show controller issues a go command to the music system, which then gener- ates time code back onto the network, which in turn triggers the actors' cuing system, light cues, sound cues, and localization cues for that segment. The system is a large network, with the systems connected as shown here:.
