By combining the ver- satility of IP packets (today mostly used for telecom) with broadcast technology (today used for distribution of digital television signals), a new and powerful medium--digital signage broadcasting--is cre- ated. The use of IP packets and broadcasting means distributing any kind of information anywhere, simultaneously, and to an unlimited number of receivers. This has never been possible before. Combining the best characteristics of two partially competing technologies pro- vides perhaps the most flexible medium ever known. CONSUMER APPLICATIONS A digital signage system may eventually replace the conventional TV set because it can provide live IPTV as well as background visual effects such as digital art and information.
