Ma ster Files a n d d e r i v a t i v e F i l e s tOOl OPtiOns PIEware Today's technologyallowsalldigitalimage files, even those in nonraw standard formats, to be adjusted in parametricimageeditors.Weneedtoexplorewhatcan be done, even to JPEG and TIFF files, in PIEware before automatically moving on to the raster image editing application, which we will assume is Photo- shop.Ofcourse,PIEwareisanevenmorepowerfuland necessaryfirststepforraworDNGfiles.Thefirstver- sionsofPIEwarehadafairlyrudimentarysetofadjust- mentparameters.Thesehavebeensupplementedwith aninitiallyconfusingarrayofimageadjustmentparam- eters.Initially,thetermsandslidersseemedtocontra- dictwhatwehadembracedasabsolutewaysofworking intheearlierdaysofdigitalimaging.Today,thepower tools,coupledwiththeglobalcolorandtoneedits,and output sharpening controls, means that many image filesneverneedatriptoPhotoshoptobeconsidered masterfiles. Hybrid Master Files There is another developing technology in PIEware thathascreatedacompletelynewmasterfileconcept, andthatisthehybridmasterfile,whichisoneormore PIEeditedimagefilesimportedintoPhotoshopasa smart object(s).
