Matching the Scene

How does one best translate a scene-referred image to an output-referred image? A scene-referred image would be an exact representation of what was actually photographed. Photographers may say that they want to capture the scene faithfully, but if they did, they would not be happy with the dark and toneless result that might initially be viewed on a monitor or a print. This is due to the failure of either monitors or prints to display the full range of brightness and color of the original scene, where the brightness range can be as much as 100, 000 : 1 and colors can be very saturated.
