Shadow Power

Our next example began with a photo I had taken for a fashion shoot, many years ago. The model’s eyes and expression had always made the photo a favorite of mine. In the original image the model was standing beside a Grecian column. I decided to turn the column into a tree and go with the feel of a wood nymph in this collage.

Collage begins

I first began by putting the model’s eye into a leaf lying on a coral walk. The result was okay, but not really exciting. The next thought was to put the leaf and eye combination back into the face. That started to work better visually, and the concept became that of a wood nymph or the goddess Flora. Additional leaves were used to clothe the model. The column was replaced by a tree trunk. The other eye was festooned with flower petals and a background was imported into the composition. Notice the cast shadow from the leaf onto the face. It is a separate layer, with the color gray painted on. Shadows are the powerful component that unites this piece and creates the realistic effect.
