Chapter 8 Subject Gallery Subject Gallery T his chapter is a collection of some popular (and some less so) subjects and basic considerations for close-up and macro photography. It is by no means complete, but should cover many of the types of subjects you are likely to come across. There is usually no one right way of photographing a particular subject, though medical, forensic, and archeological photographers in particular will use standardized lighting and orientation so that subjects from different institutions can be compared. Scales are usually included in these images so that a comparative size can be obtained. Scales are available commercially (see the Resources chapter). Remember: If the subject has depth, it is important to align the scale with the main plane of focus within the subject. Record Photography I have used the rather bland term of record photography for images shot to record subjects in a technical and consistent way, to show as much detail and information as possible. Museums, hospitals, police, and many other areas need this type of imaging, where the main goal is to record in a consistent 133
