5. Digital Capture  > Camera Settings for Night Photography

CAMERA SETTINGS FOR NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

•  RAW: Use the RAW mode instead of JPEG to preserve the maximum amount of data.

•  Native ISO setting: Use your camera’s native ISO setting whenever possible for the best image quality.

•  White balance: Set the white balance as close as possible to the desired color temperature for the most accurate histograms.

•  Manual or bulb exposure mode: Use the manual exposure mode to maintain full control over your camera settings.

•  Long-exposure noise reduction: Consider using LENR with older cameras, cameras that allow continuous shooting with LENR enabled, and when the temperature is above 50 F (10 C).

•  Histograms: Enable both the RGB and luminance histograms, or toggle between them for the most accurate exposure information. Base your exposure on the image preview and the histograms.
