Chapter 14 Shooting and Editing for the ... > Hardware Acceleration - Pg. 188

188 Chapter 14 SHOOTING AND EDITING FOR THE ENTERPRISE RAID-50 systems are found in larger corporations that require high bandwidth. Sometimes called RAID 5 1 0, they use "nested RAID levels" that consist of RAID-0 arrays configured together using RAID-5 parity distribution. RAID-0 systems are faster than RAID-5, but they lack data backup. A RAID 50 com- bines the best of the RAID-0 and RAID-5 attributes. When purchasing a RAID system, consult with the provider of your video editing platform for requirements, recommenda- tions, or suggestions. Avid platforms need four arrays to work with uncompressed HD streams, while Apple Final Cut users may use a system such as the Xserve RAID. More advanced RAID systems include fiber channel ports for data transport between the storage unit and the host computers. Some sys- tems include spare disks that automatically activate in case of a drive failure. Others will notify the user by e-mail of a faulty drive.
