Hospitals and Medical Centers Color television had its first practical demonstration not by a television network but at the 1949 convention of the American Medical Association. As reported in Life Magazine (June 6, 1949), CBS designed a remote-controlled color camera for use in the operating room, and they transmitted the signal to 20 specially built receivers at the convention in Atlanta. This color television system was developed not for entertainment but as a new method of visual education for the medical profession. Since the FCC had not yet approved the CBS system (it was dif- ferent from the soon-to-be-adopted NBC system), it could not be received on standard black and white sets.
