Determining the Costs

Depending on the scope of your video production, you may be able to wait until a treatment has been approved, or even until the entire script has been approved, before estimating your budget. It is best to aim for the latter. Then you know what you have to work with during the process of breaking down the script to organize shooting. With that structure in mind you can start figuring out the most efficient way to meet your needs for talent, locations, crew, equipment, postproduction, and all the ancillary and administrative costs.

Most corporate video departments have a chargeback system where the department requesting the video becomes the client and is billed by the video department or entity. If you are an in-house producer with the goal of going independent, this chargeback system can help you learn how it is to work with a client. You’ll be operating as if you were an outside production facility, so you may need to “sell” the video production idea to the client. Also keep in mind that within companies that have chargeback systems, the requesting department is usually free to go to the outside to use one of your competitors.
