Script Breakdown

Either the production manager or the assistant director is the one who breaks down the script to create a shooting schedule. In the corporate world that is usually the same person. The scenes are frequently shot out of order, and you will want to organize the sequence of shooting to minimize the crew’s camera setups. You also want to use actors and settings most efficiently. Frequently all the scenes with a key actor are shot together, and all the scenes at a particular location or setting are filmed at the same time. The scenes that can be shot with a limited cast and a smaller crew may be scheduled at a later time.

The script breakdown starts with marking the script to divide it by the category of shot and by the actors scheduled to perform. Software applications are available for script breakdown, such as Final Draft Tagger or Movie Magic Screenwriter, that tag the different elements with color codes. Then you export the tagged elements by category into a schedule app such as Movie Magic EP Scheduler.
