2. Character modeling  > Playtime: Practice without pixels

PLAYTIME: Practice without pixels

CHARACTER MODELING HAS ITS roots in the centuries-old art of sculpture. Becoming an expert at this ancient craft is a sure way to improve your modeling skills. But before you rush out and buy a set of chisels, consider these everyday alternatives. For a few dollars and a couple hours of play, you can increase your character modeling skills by leaps and bounds.

If you have children, then you might already have access to my favorite tool: Play-Doh. Get down with the kiddies and try your hand at sculpting a doll, a farm animal, or even a drooling ogre. You’ll be amazed at how a few sessions with the gooey stuff will bump up your modeling skills, not to mention the benefit of giving you quality time with the little people in your life. Another favorite type of clay is Sculpey, available at many craft stores.
