Gestalt theory

In the larger sense, gestalt theory defines a complex set of abstract “laws” of perception and behavior that, when integrated, form a whole that is greater than the sum of stimuli and response. Before your eyes start to glaze over, rest assured that Koffka’s treatise on gestalt psychology is not required reading for photographers.

But despite its intimidating sound and the serious academic principles behind gestalt theory, it’s a concept that’s easy to grasp. You’ve practiced it most of your life without knowing it.

Gestalt is a German word meaning “shape.” Early 20th-century German psychologists developed gestalt theory to describe the human brain’s innate self-organizing tendencies, seeking wholeness in the way we view the world. It has important implications in the visual arts, but you don’t need a Ph.D. in psychology to understand it.
