Chapter Thirteen. Game Modeling

Real-time 3D gaming has shown amazing growth over the years. Because of this, the opportunities for digital artists have grown as well. There has never been a better time than right now to be an artist working in gaming.

The 3D models being created for the latest console and computer games (commonly referred to as next generation or next-gen models) allow for an amazing amount of detail that, in many cases, match the details of the digital models seen in feature films. Hardware and software continues to evolve, allowing the amount of polygons used in game assets to increase at an amazing rate. A character model used in a top console game 15 years ago may have been limited to 500 polygons; today it can reach 30,000 polygons and up.
