I’M NOT MUCH OF A LANDSCAPE, national parks, hiking kind of guy. My idea of the wilderness is the New York City subway system. But, courtesy of hanging around with my friend and legendary wildlife shooter Moose Peterson, over the last few years I’ve had a chance to sample some truly beautiful areas of America.
About four years ago, at sunrise at Horseshoe Canyon in Moab, UT, I saw an area that remained shaded by rocks, while the rest of the canyon got bathed in beautiful morning light. I filed it away.
It took me four years to get back there; thankfully, it being a national park, it was still there. (That’s always the danger in urban areas. You see something you like, file it away in the “location futures” Rolodex section of your brain, and then you go back and they’ve built a Burger King right where you were going to put your tripod.)
