Jonathan has a wonderful, physical style made for simple, run-and-gun shooting. For the most part, out there in Red Hook, in Brooklyn, I used one Speedlight.
To pin him to the yellow wall for the shot that leads this story, I used one SB-910 unit, linked to an SD-9 battery pack. I generally don’t like to create multiple shadows, which is what the combo of the sun and the flash gave me, but I liked it. When he went up, and his legs flew out, and his mixed shadows played off the wall behind him, I saw a vibration I liked, which of course was a total accident. I didn’t plan to see this building, in that particular light.
Then, of course, I had to get fancy. Jonathan can basically run up and down the sides of buildings, so I found some open shade, and some symmetrical columns, and asked him what he could do with them. His response was to basically become a smiling, exuberant Superman. It was such a soaring move, I didn’t want to waste it.
